Out of Office #1: Education in times of Permanent Distraction

Digital technology is fun and exciting, but it’s also damn addictive. Research shows that young people between 18 and 24 years old spend an average of 37 hours per month looking at their smartphone. That’s almost a full work week per month. Not surprising in the age of the "attention economy".

There are now four million apps and all the creators want you to focus your attention on their app. They use psychological knowledge to get it done. And they are getting better at it. Quite inconvenient if you want to work or study when there is something in your pocket yelling for attention. How do we deal with this? Do we influence technology or does technology influence us?
