Artist in Residence: Dinie Besems

Lying on the table is a ribbon of flat, black beads woven with the words: 'Topaap. Wij zitten lul ter hand op rug van wijzen.' The text is from a poem by Piet Gerbrandy. "I do not quite understand what it is trying to say, and that is exactly why it inspires me!" explains Dinie Besems.

On this Thursday morning, we have a roundtable discussion with our first artist-in-residence at Spring House. Dinie (1966) was trained as a jewellery designer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, and her work is included in several museum collections.

During the conversation it becomes clear that she works from an ever-changing starting point or reference. Once she has found it, she elaborates on that principle. "I think it's important that everything I create leads back to the beginning, to the mother," explains Dinie. Terms like 'algorithm', 'manipulation', 'mimicry', 'types and characteristics’ describe her method. Not the jewel to adorn, but the jewel as an autonomous, wearable object.

While she speaks enthusiastically about some examples lying on the table and their origins (from disease cells to failed oranges and zucchinis) the ribbon of flat black beads is passed around the table. It is very tactile. The men are especially fascinated by the feeling. The ‘mat’ is also very popular. It is an ingenious woven piece of metal that can be pulled open from the middle and can be worn on or over the head. Textiles with a masculine twist. Tijmen Schep is impressed: "Dinie uses all modern, strong techniques, like laser-cutting, 3D-printing, robotics, etc. and converts it to create sensual jewellery where the technique is secondary. In this field I find her inspiring!”

Dinie will be expanding her research project Koi in Spring House until the end of January 2016. How the black/white/orange-spots will develop in the House is still unknown. But we love being involved.
